Right to Rent Checklist

Legal requirement to check all adult tenants have the right to rent in the UK.

Acceptable Documents (List A - Unlimited Right):

  • UK or Irish passport
  • Biometric Residence Permit
  • Passport with indefinite leave to remain stamp

Acceptable Documents (List B - Time-Limited Right):

  • Passport with valid visa
  • Immigration Status Document
  • Share code from gov.uk/prove-right-to-rent

What You Must Do:

  • Check original documents in person
  • Take copies and record check date
  • Keep records for duration of tenancy + 1 year

Penalties:

Failure to conduct checks: Up to £20,000 fine per tenant
